How to Care for Your Teeth

 In Dental Care

Teeth have an important role in our lives. We need them to eat, speak, and smile. Caring for your teeth is essential for maintaining those vital functions. Here are simple ways you can care for your teeth to stay healthy.

Practicing Proper Dental Care at Home

Daily care at home is an essential component of preventing cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss. Although power toothbrushes are quite effective, they’re not required to keep your teeth clean. At a minimum, you need a soft-bristled brush and a fluoride toothpaste.

The proper technique is to gently brush in small, circular motions. Use your brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums. Take care to brush all your teeth’s surfaces. Brushing your tongue reduces bacteria in your mouth. The recommended schedule for brushing your teeth is right before bedtime and once during the day.

Dental floss can reach areas that your toothbrush can’t. Flossing should take place once a day. After you brush and floss, rinse your mouth well with water. Floss holders are available in stores for anyone has trouble handling traditional floss.

Also, to prevent the growth of bacteria, rinse your toothbrush after use.  Then store your brush where it can air dry before the next use. It’s time to replace your toothbrush after three months of use. Brushes with worn or splayed bristles should be replaced right away.

A healthy diet is necessary for maintaining dental health. It’s particularly helpful to limit sweets, sticky foods, and sugary drinks to an occasional treat.

Getting Help from Your Dental Professional

Visit your dentist every six months for preventive care. During your appointment, your dental professional removes the plaque and tartar that can cause gum disease.  Your examination also includes looking for signs of problems such as tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer.
