Dental Implants at Wytheville Dental

 In Dental Care

There are many reasons why your dentist may recommend dental implants. If you’ve had a tooth removed because of chipping or decay, or if you are missing a tooth for any reason, your dentist may suggest getting an implant. Implants are not only a permanent and reliable solution for a missing tooth, they can also encourage healthy bone growth, keep a set of dentures securely in place, and allow you to eat and drink normally.

Dental Implants

Dental implants have a few different parts, including a screw-like implant, the abutment, and the visible crown. The implant that is inserted into the jaw is made of titanium or titanium alloy, while the crown can be made of porcelain or acrylic. The abutment is usually made from titanium or zirconium and fits neatly into the implant, acting as a secure seat for the crown. At Wytheville Dental, we usually use an All-On-4 or an implant hybrid bridge to secure your dental implants. There are a few steps in this process:

Process

First, you will have the metal rod implanted into your jaw. Your dentist will have several rules as you recover, including antibacterial washes and NO brushing! After a week, the stitches will be removed, and the healing process will take between 4-6 months. Next, your dentist will remove the screw that keeps the implant in place, and puts a protective cap in place. It should take between 2-3 weeks for a full recovery, which is when your dentist will begin making the necessary bridge, crown, or denture set. Finally, your crown (the ‘tooth’) will be attached to the implant. Your dentist will help you choose the correct material and size for your mouth.
