Are you Brushing Your Teeth Correctly?
You confidently tell your dentist that you brush your teeth twice a day, but without the right techniques, you’re not reaping the full benefits of tooth brushing.
Proper brushing can prevent cavities and other oral health issues, remove plaque, and reduce bad breath. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends several key components for an effective brushing routine:
Time It Right
To thoroughly clean your teeth, brush for two minutes each session, dedicating thirty seconds to each quadrant of your mouth. Many people don’t brush long enough. Find a song you love that’s around two minutes long to time your brushing. This will help improve your technique and make brushing more enjoyable!
Replace Your Toothbrush Regularly
Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if it looks worn. Using an old toothbrush isn’t effective for your oral health. When shopping for a new toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, look for products with the ADA’s seal of approval.
Brush Every Surface
Mindlessly running your toothbrush over your teeth isn’t enough. To get the most out of your brushing, make sure to brush the front, back, and top of each tooth with short strokes. If you don’t enjoy using a manual toothbrush, try a powered one, although manual brushes work well, too.
In addition to proper brushing techniques, remember to floss, limit excess sugar, and visit your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. Contact us today to schedule a visit for preventative care or to address any dental issues.
