Tooth Filling – Fast Facts
Fun fact, well, not so fun, but still a fact: 92% of adults (aged between 20 and 64) living in the United States have dental caries in their permanent teeth, with 26% of these cases being untreated. When you visit a dentist, one of the most common methods that will be used to treat your dental cavity is tooth filling. Additionally, the procedure can be used to repair broken or cracked teeth, together with worn-out ones.
What Tooth Filling Entails
After examining the condition of your teeth, the dentist will numb the area around the tooth to be refilled using an anesthetic. The dentist will then clean the cavity in your infected tooth/ teeth before placing a liner made of glass or composite resin to shield your nerve.
After everything is set, the doctor will put fillings in your teeth, after which a polish is applied for a sublime finish. Colored fillings may require extra steps.
Types of Filling Materials
In the modern day, several types of filling materials are available, with each having its advantages and disadvantages. For instance, cast gold fillings are durable, have enough strength to withstand physical activities such as chewing, and are easy on the eye. However, the gold fillings are expensive and require extra office visits.
On the other hand, silver fillings are durable, affordable, and have enough strength to withstand chewing. However, they have poor aesthetics, may cause allergic reactions for some people, and can cause discoloration.
Tooth-colored composite fillings are easy on the eye, bond perfectly with your tooth structure, very versatile, and don’t require much preparation. Their disadvantages include wearing out quickly and increased chair time.
