Getting Dentures: What To Expect
It can take time to get used to wearing dentures, and The Wytheville Dental Group wants to make you feel as comfortable as possible when coming into our offices. This guide will talk about what to expect from getting dentures and give you a rough timeline for your recovery.
What to expect when getting dentures
It can be hard to know what to expect when you’re getting dentures, so here’s an idea of what you can expect from your new dentures.
First day:
If you are getting immediate dentures, you can wear them immediately after your teeth are extracted. If the tooth extraction is done that day, we will give you painkillers and antibiotics. Don’t remove them on the first day, so your gums have a chance to heal. You should even wear them to bed as they will act as a shield to stop infection. After the first day, you can remove the dentures when you sleep so your gums have a chance to rest. We recommend eating soft food as the extraction site will be sore.
First Few Weeks
After the first day, you’ll need to return to our office as your gums will contract as they heal. You may need to come several times before we find a perfect fit. If it’s challenging to eat, you can supplement your meals with protein drinks.
After a Few Weeks
It will take some time for you to get used to wearing dentures, but as time passes, you’ll notice fewer sore spots, and you’ll need to come back to our office less for adjustments. Like all things, it will take practice and will get better with use.
