Don’t Let Sensitive Teeth Ruin Your Summer Fun
Having sensitive teeth can decrease your enjoyment of ice cream, tea, or other summer favorites. Tooth pain when eating or drinking cold treats is very common. Read on to find six ways to limit your teeth sensitivity so that it doesn’t disrupt your summer cravings.
What Causes Sensitive Teeth?
Tooth sensitivity is caused by inflammation due to damaged or worn spots in the enamel, dental infection, or receding gums. These conditions allow the nerve endings deep inside the tooth to be shocked by hot or cold. Eating acidic foods, grinding your teeth, or even using too hard of a toothbrush could cause damage to the enamel.
Prevention
- See Your Dentist- The most helpful thing you can do to protect your teeth is to see your dentist for regular preventative care. Your dentist will ensure that your enamel is in good condition and help you choose dental care products to eliminate your sensitivity.
- Use a softer toothbrush- A soft-bristled toothbrush will adequately clean your teeth without the risk of scratching or damaging your enamel. There is no benefit to using firmer toothbrushes, as they cause more harm than good. Stick to a soft-bristled brush.
- Limit acidic and sugary food- Acidic and sugary foods can cause the tooth enamel to erode, which leaves your teeth open to infection.
- Don’t grind your teeth- If you grind your teeth at night, it is a good idea to wear a mouth guard so that your teeth are protected. There is a lot of pressure on your teeth when you grind them. A mouth guard will prevent that pressure from damaging your teeth.
- Rinse with peroxide- Peroxide is used to treat tooth decay. Just put a teaspoon into a small glass of warm water and swish it around for about 60 seconds. This will help kill bacteria that could be causing your tooth pain.
- Use a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth- Some toothpaste is formulated with ingredients that will reduce the pain of cold or hot on your teeth. Just make sure to choose a toothpaste that also contains fluoride, which will help protect your enamel. Taking proper care of your teeth will prevent cavities and reduce pain.
