Facts About Flossing

 In Dental Care

One of the most frequently asked questions a dentist receives is, does flossing actually matter? We’re told that flossing every day is important to our oral health, but is that really true? Here are all the facts about flossing and why it’s important.

Flossing

We know brushing our teeth is an excellent way to fight off cavities and gingivitis, but did you know flossing helps with that too? Not only that, but it also helps to fight off other health conditions that could occur as a result of bacteria in your mouth. This is the one tool you have at home that can get to the tough to reach places of your tooth that your toothbrush can’t. It works to remove plaque and tartar, which are the beginning stages of more serious dental issues. In addition, it can stop gingivitis, which can progress to periodontal disease. Periodontal disease allows bacteria to enter through your gums, which then goes into your bloodstream. From there, it can travel to other parts of your body including your heart and respiratory tract. This can lead to serious health issues.

Facts

Just as you brush your teeth every day, you should also include flossing in your routine. You don’t have to necessarily floss twice a day as you do brushing, but at least once. If you haven’t flossed in a while and notice blood while doing so, don’t worry. As long as you floss gently and continue to do so on a more routine basis, the bleeding will stop. If it doesn’t contact your dentist just to be safe. When you’re flossing remember to get in between all your teeth and do so gently.
