Process Of Getting A Dental Crown

 In Dental Care

There are different processes for each dental procedure, some more intensive than others. If you are in need of a crown, the process is not that difficult. Crowns are a routine procedure your dentist has a lot of practice doing. To prepare you for your procedure, we have created a simple outline of the process. Here is what happens when you get a crown.

What Is A Crown?

A crown is a cemented restoration that partially or completely covers the outside of a tooth. It is needed when a part of the tooth is visible in the mouth, either above or below the gum line. A dental crown is inserted to protect the rest of the tooth and root from further infection. It also is a way to enhance your smile, while keeping your teeth safe.

Process

The process of getting a crown is simple and routine. Your dentist will first administer local anesthesia to the area. If your tooth is not able to fit the crown, it will need to be shaved down. You will not feel this due to the anesthesia, so no need to worry. Once your tooth is the proper size, a mold will need to be made. The mold will then help your dentist create a proper size crown to fit your exact tooth. Your dentist will determine the shade of color your crown will need to be based on your other teeth. This way your crown will blend right in and no one will no otherwise.

Your permanent crown will not be inserted on this day, but a temporary crown will. It takes time to create a permanent crown, so you will need to return for a follow up once it is ready. Once your permanent crown is finished, you will return for another appointment. The dentist will remove your temporary crown. Then, he or she will glue your new crown in place!
